Qidush HaShem in The City of HaShem
Let me point out the Qiddush HaShem (Sanctification of Gd's name) for those that fail to see it:
When 60 ribo (600,000) of Jews publicly accept the Yoke of Heaven it is a Qiddush HaShem, by definition.
It is *NOT* rationale to conclude that the performance of a mitswah (Qidush HaShem is a mitswah) is contingent upon it being favorable in the eyes of non (or non observant) Jews.
When 400-600,000 people demonstrate to express their opinion peaceably (even if you might not agree with their opinion), without violence, vandalism or disorder, no matter who it is, that is a sanctification of Gd's Name.

A Tale of Two Zionisms
Since
the advent of "modern Zionism" the political-social "ism"
has been the subject of a very deep internal tension. With the creation of the State of Israel, the
military victories and acquisition of territory, the tension deepened. The current "threat of peace," has
created a crisis of dissonance that cannot be ignored. At its root it is an identity crisis: What is Zionism? What is its purpose, its reason d'êtres?
This
is why so many, speaking in the name of "Zionism," voice such
disparate and contrary positions. Even
many individuals are found to sometimes speak in "two voices," as many
individuals, particularly those involved in politics have affinities for
aspects of both models.
On
the one hand, according to the Herzelian model of Zionism, it has already
fulfilled its purpose and has therefore become irrelevant. This is the phenomena of the so-called
"Post-Zionism." Herzelian
Zionism came into existence to answer the eternal and troubling "Jewish
Question." This wasn't only a
question for Jews, as the world had for centuries struggled with the same
question: What to do with the Jews?
While many of the "solutions" proffered to this question were
quite horrendous, Herzl, in his monumental effort, did not radically stray from
the basic parameters and constraints of the "problem." The Jews, as a social religious national
group, stood apart from the rest of civilization, unable or refusing to
integrate with the rest of the world. As
a result, according to the model, Jews were subject to persecution. The establishment of a modern "normal"
state for the Jews was intended to facilitate the Jewish nation's integration
into the family of nations, while at the same time provide a haven, and refuge
from persecution.
Yet,
there is another voice, an older, deeper voice of Zionism that resonates, and
has always resonated in the hearts of even the most cynical and pragmatic
Jew. This is the voice of Redemptive
Zionism. Within this paradigm of
Zionism, the State of Israel is but a step in the continually unfolding process
of redemption, a redemption that is defined through the unification of the
people of Israel with the
God of Israel in the Land
of Israel. It is a process of Zionism that culminates in
the fulfillment of Israel's role
as a light, a teacher and example, a leader to the rest of the world, and is
symbolized through the building of the Temple on
Mount Moriah.
When
there are voices decrying that Jews cannot live under "foreign rule"
(because it's not safe), or that they should refuse the Spanish citizenship
(because we "can't trust the goyim), these are echoes of the Herzelian
Zionism. A Redemptive Zionist would not
ask how Jews could live under foreign rule, but rather, how could the Land of Israel be under foreign rule? And further, how can the Jewish State be run
by foreign rules?
Redemptive
Zionists are not threatened by a government trying to make amends for its
past. They are not "afraid of the
goyim," but rather recognize their mission to redeem the other nations
from their spiritual and moral slumber.
For
Redemptive Zionists, the State of Israel is not "compensation," for
the crimes of humanity have perpetrated against the nation of Israel. It doesn't see Israel as victims. Rather, it sees the ingathering of the nation
of Israel to the Land of Israel as the fulfillment of an eternal
promise by Gd. Redemption Zionists see
it as incumbent to remain loyal to that promise and to help enable its complete
fulfillment.
Herzelian
Zionism, particularly in the early years, siphoned the strong natural
inclination of Redemptive Zionism that is implanted in every Jewish soul. But the goals of Herzelian Zionism are a false
destiny, and are therefore doomed to fail.
The miracle of Israel
can not be truncated by the pragmatism.
Any attempt to do so will only set back the entire enterprise.
It
is time for the Redemptive Zionists to stop listening to the echoes of
Herzl. There is no Jewish problem to
solve, only a Jewish promise to fulfill.

It's the System Stupid ---
When a system has everyone more or less playing by the
rules and achieves the level of dysfunction we now have, it's time to stop
looking for a scapegoat and understand that the problem is the system itself.
It's The System Stupid
Most people are familiar with the
old "Wise Men of Chelm" story about a particularly dangerous and
steep mountain pass. There was a
particular point on the road where many vehicles overturned and fell down the
cliff into the valley below. So, the
Wise Men of Chelm decided the best thing to do was to build a hospital at the
bottom of the hill.
Of course, we all know the story,
but instead of learning from it, we insist to repeat it, thinking that our
hospital will actually be a real solution to the problem.
It's time to stop building valley
hospitals. It's time to climb the
mountain and fix or change the road completely.
Bayit Yehudi (The Jewish Home) and
Yesh Atid (There is a Future) have identified a number of problems with Israeli
society. Things aren't working, vehicles
and people are falling off the cliff face, but they are just offering a
different spin on the "hospital on the valley floor" solutions.
Let's face it, most of these
"burning issues," though clearly populist crowd pleasers, aren't
going to make any real changes in the way Israeli society functions or fails to
function. It's not getting us any closer
to the goal.
What goal, you ask? Ah, maybe that would be the first, and most
important discussion we have in Israel. What is our goal? Why are we using this precarious and
seemingly fatal mountain pass? Where are
we trying to get to?
As we approach the Jewish Spring –
Aviv – that which is supposed to be the first of our months, maybe we should
take a look at where we have come from, what is expected of us as a People, and
then we might be able to figure out where we need to go. Once we do that I'm sure we are a clever
enough nation to figure out how to build a safe and clear road to our
destination.
When a system has everyone more or
less playing by the rules and achieves the level of dysfunction we now have,
it's time to stop looking for a scapegoat and understand that the problem is
the system itself.
Bayith Yehudi (Jewish Home) and Yesh
Atid (There is a Future) have already proven that they can hold a government
hostage and force an issue if they want to.
Now maybe, it's time to choose a better issue, one that will actually
help us fulfill our destiny as a Jewish Nation.

I hope I'm Wrong
I've been following the coalition negotiations in Israel with the
same fascination one watches a car crash:
It's too horrible to watch, but you can't take your eyes off it.
I'm one of those people living in Yehudah and Shomron (Judea and Samaria – the Territories)
who didn't vote for Bayit Yehudi (Jewish Home).
I almost did support them - almost.
In the time leading up to the election, there were things that Bennett
said, ideas offered, and plans made that made me think that maybe this time,
maybe Mafdal (the old NRP) has really been reformed. For a moment I had hope. Granted it was the hope of a man who had
already caught his wife too many time in compromising situations, but it was
still hope.
Then something happened that shook my hope. I'll be honest, I can't articulate what those
things were, but they pushed me back into a wait and see attitude. Suspicion crowded out my hope, and, in the
end I didn't vote for them. I thought,
even hoped that I was wrong.
But now, I have to admit, I do not regret my decision at all. The writing is on the wall. The old "Mafdal" (NRP) still
lives. The party that betrayed the Land
of Israel – they are bear ultimate responsibility for allowing the
Disengagement to take place, and thus allowed for a creation of "disconnect" between the Land of
Israel and the People of Israel – will now betray the Torah of Israel, and
encourage a "disconnect" between the nation the Torah.
To be clear, I am not a fan of the worldview of the Lithuanian
"Haredi" community. I am not a
proponent of the current Yeshiva world mentality, and I find it difficult to
think that the final redemption will be realized through their agency. In fact, I suspect that they are doing their
best, consciously or not, to delay the final redemption as long as
possible.
That said, Bayit Yehudi is on the wrong side of the battle in the
current political maelstrom. For, let's
be honest, the debate isn't about the red herring of "equal burden,"
but rather about making the Torah subservient to the state.
The arguments, about funding, equal burden etc. are ALL red herrings, a
thinly veiled ruse for the central argument of trying to force a certain sector
that's scaring the pants off all the other sectors, to accept the VALUES and lifestyle
of those other sectors. It's a continuation of trying to "Israelize"
the Jew.
This is a battle that Mafdal/NRP had already conceded, at least in terms
of the Land of Israel, as well as many other issues
such as the forcing of young man to listen to a woman sing.
And, now, they want force the Haredim to also accept such a worldview,
and it is using the issue of army service (of which Bennett himself has already
said is too big to be effective) to coerce them to accept it. Worse, Bennett has brought the Mafdal/NRP
into an alliance with a figure who, though in professed love not hate, denies
the very principles and values for which it supposedly stands. Lapid has clearly stated he doesn't just want
to break the Haredi "monopoly" on Torah, but the Orthodox hegemony
one as well. And having surrendered
their ideals to expediency (just as they were with the Disengagement),
Mafdal/NRP will be powerless to stop him.

A Man and His Dog
A Man and His Dogs
Once upon
a time there was a man who owned vicious and aggressive dogs. But, he was a strict, sometimes cruel master,
and the dogs soon learned to control the aggression, and to behave. While they chaffed under the man's cruelty,
the man also cared for the dogs with love.
They're bellies were full, and they wanted for nothing. One
day, a stranger came by. Because the
dogs were under the man's control, the dogs appeared docile and tame. They licked the stranger's hand, and offered
their belly for the stranger to pet and rub.
Then the stranger noticed the strict way in which the man controlled the
dogs. He protested, but the man said he
did not understand the nature of the dogs, and the stranger should mind his own
business. The stranger became more and
more agitated.
Unable to
bear it any longer, one night the stranger, released the dogs, helping them to
escape. The dogs, now free, first
attacked their former master, killing him.
The stranger looked on, confidant that, though it was a tragedy, the man
had gotten what he deserved, for had he only been kinder to the dogs, then they
would have appreciated all he had done for them.
The
stranger was sad, but resigned. But as
he died, the man looked at the stranger and smiled, as if he held a secret that
the stranger couldn't comprehend. This
disconcerted the stranger, but he tried to put it out of his mind.
The
stranger continued to come to the man's home and visit the dogs, with which he
had developed such a fondness for. He
assumed they loved him, especially now that the stranger had helped to liberate
them from the cruel master.
Then one
day, the dogs, unrestrained by their former master saw something in the
stranger, something they despised. When
the stranger came closer, full of love and charity, the dogs attacked him.
The
stranger protested, how could they do such a thing? But the dogs didn't listen. The stranger tried to explain how it was he
that had freed them – they owed him, but this only angered the dogs more. They soon tore him to shreds. Before he died, the stranger remembered the
man, and his smile, and cried a bitter cry.

Towards an Authentic Jewish Spirituality
by
Yoel Qeren
(reposted with permission from http://machonshilo.org/en/eng/component/content/article/34-featured/611-towards-an-authentic-jewish-spirituality)
What
is Jewish spirituality? As with all Torah concepts, exile has clouded
our ideas of what spirituality is and what purpose it serves. True
spirituality is a personal experience of the ethereal universe and
ultimately, of God Himself. In its highest form, Jewish spirituality is
prophecy, and prophecy in its highest form will bring about the
resurrection of the dead. Our sages tell us that this is the true goal
of authentic Jewish spirituality. They called us "B'nei Nevi'im", the
sons, or spiritual heirs of prophets. That is who we are meant to be.
Prophecy was once the driving force behind the nation of Israel, its leaders and its military. That
was its purpose, to guide the nation according to the will of Hashem.
Needless to say, we are a far cry from this lofty ideal today.
However, it is our duty, as a nation reconstituted on its ancient
homeland, to begin moving back toward this original spirituality, back
toward the prophetic ideal.
To begin moving in this direction, we must take small steps. First and foremost is the study of Tanakh.
This in and of itself is a great spiritual endeavor. Its pages are a
window into the world of the prophets. We can see how they prayed, how
they spoke, and the message they brought to Israel. From them we learn
of the profound spiritual effects of music and that in addition to
communal prayer, one must make time to speak directly to our Father in
heaven. The importance of these concepts was recognized
throughout history by such luminaries as R' Nahman of Breslov, who
brilliantly expounded on the spiritual benefits of music and meditation, and taught his disciples to engage in free, unscripted conversation with God every day.
Next, we must immerse ourselves in the words of our sages,
who imparted to us their knowledge of prophecy and its purpose. From
them we learn that the prophetic experience exists on many levels. Our
sages tell us that every dream is one sixtieth of prophecy. Stop and
think about that for a moment. Something as mundane and routine as a
dream is actually a small taste of the loftiest spiritual state
attainable by man. Even though actual prophecy may seem out of our
reach, we must know that it is always with us. And if we train ourselves
to think, act and pray in a manner consistent with the way of the
prophets, we may gain small glimpses, small flashes of light and clarity
that can change us for the better.
Lastly and perhaps most importantly is the necessity of having a continual connection with the land of Israel. Prophecy is intimately connected with this land, and eretz Yisrael is the only aspect of Jewish spirituality that is tangible.
The land itself is holy and unlike other aspects of qedusha, it can be
touched, smelled, tasted. When you touch the land of Israel, you touch
and experience holiness. The physical and spiritual planes are united
here like nowhere else on earth. Yet they are united in a way that is
simply and easily experienced.
Do not confuse this with the awe of
creation that one might experience upon seeing a beautiful mountain or
river. This is also a profound spiritual experience, but it can be found
anywhere. The land of Israel is different. It is overflowing, not only
with natural beauty, but also with an overpowering sense of history and
purpose.
When one drinks from the same
springs as prophets and kings, when one climbs to the caves his
ancestors lived and even died in, he begins to feel a sense of
continuity and connection with those who came before him. It is
almost as if they are standing beside him. Their words come alive,
echoing through the hills and valleys. The lines between past and
present, between physical and spiritual, begin to blur.
It is at this point that a Jew begins
to grasp who he truly is. He begins to understand his relationship with
his maker and his people. He attains a clearer vision of his purpose in
this world and where he should be headed. These are small yet vital
steps toward the ultimate goal of restoring prophecy.
Immersion in Tanakh and Hazal,
connecting with eretz Yisrael and engaging in honest, heartfelt prayer;
this is the way of our fathers. It will do for us what no red string or
swinging chicken can. This is authentic Jewish spirituality and like a
fiery chariot, it waits to carry our nation to new heights.
